Guwahati/Jorhat, March 5, 2026 – An advanced Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force has gone missing after taking off from the Jorhat Air Base in Assam for a routine sortie. The last radar contact with the aircraft was established at 7:42 PM IST, after which it disappeared over the hilly terrain of Karbi Anglong district. The Indian Air Force has immediately activated search and rescue (SAR) operations in the area.
Incident Details and Official Statement
The Indian Air Force issued an official update on social media platform X confirming the development:
“A Su-30MKI aircraft of the Indian Air Force is reported overdue. The aircraft had taken off from Jorhat, Assam, and last contact was made at 7:42 PM. Further details are being gathered and search & rescue operations have been initiated.”
The Ministry of Defence PRO in Guwahati, Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, confirmed that the jet was flying over Karbi Anglong district when radar contact was abruptly lost.
Local sources report hearing a loud explosion or bang in the Nilip Block and Chokihola areas, raising suspicions of a possible crash. No official confirmation regarding the pilot’s status has been released yet.
IAF teams, local police, district administration, helicopters, and drones are actively searching the mountainous and densely forested region. Ground teams are navigating difficult terrain to locate any wreckage or signs of the aircraft.
Su-30MKI: The Backbone of Indian Air Power
The Su-30MKI is a highly capable, multi-role, twin-engine air superiority fighter jointly developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and India’s HAL. It is specially customized for the Indian Air Force and forms the core of its frontline combat strength.
The IAF currently operates 272 Su-30MKI jets, making it the largest and most potent squadron in the service.
The aircraft features 12 hardpoints capable of carrying up to 8,130 kg of ordnance, including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, air-to-air missiles (R-77, R-27), air-to-ground missiles, precision-guided bombs, rockets, and pods.
It is armed with the GSh-30-1 30mm autocannon capable of firing 150 rounds per minute.
When equipped with BrahMos, the missile has a range of approximately 500 km and travels at supersonic speeds, posing a significant deterrent to adversaries like China and Pakistan.
The jet’s thrust-vectoring engines, advanced avionics, electronic warfare suite, and supermaneuverability allow it to dominate both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
Strategic Importance and Implications
The Jorhat Air Base is strategically located in Northeast India, close to the borders with China ( Arunachal Pradesh sector) and Myanmar. Su-30MKIs from this base regularly conduct combat air patrols, quick-reaction alert missions, and readiness drills in one of the most sensitive frontier regions.
Any loss or accident involving a frontline asset like the Su-30MKI is a serious concern for operational readiness and national security.
Pilot safety remains the top priority. Mountainous terrain, dense forests, and adverse weather can severely complicate rescue efforts.
A Court of Inquiry will be ordered to determine the cause—possible technical malfunction, bird strike, weather-related disorientation, or any other factor.
The Indian Air Force and the nation stand united in hoping for the safe recovery of the pilot. The armed forces’ swift response and professionalism in such situations deserve appreciation. Updates on the search operation and the fate of the aircraft and pilot are awaited with utmost concern.
