Spain’s Bold Move: Spanish Firm Gets Mining License in Iran Amid US Sanctions

Despite ongoing American sanctions and efforts to isolate Iran economically, Spain has taken a pragmatic step forward. Iran’s South Khorasan province has issued an investment license to a Spanish company for the extraction and processing of mineral deposits. This marks Spain’s first major investment of this kind in Iran’s mining sector.

According to Iranian state media, the Director General of Economic Affairs and Finance for South Khorasan confirmed the license. It brings the number of countries with investors in the province to 12, including China, Afghanistan, South Africa, Germany, and more recent entrants like Turkey, Oman, and the UAE. Details of the Spanish company, investment size, and specific mineral deposits have not been disclosed.

The announcement comes amid clear US warnings of secondary sanctions against those providing Tehran a financial lifeline. Yet Spanish leadership prioritized pure economic interests and mutual development with Iran. While most European nations remain hesitant under American pressure, Spain has put its commercial advantages first.

Iran holds enormous reserves in mining and industrial minerals, including significant copper and other resources. Advanced European technology has long been needed to extract and process them effectively. Spain’s move demonstrates that when national interests and economic gains are at stake, countries do not hesitate to look beyond unilateral political restrictions.

This agreement opens a new pathway between Europe and Iran. Spain reopened its diplomatic mission in Tehran earlier, building on past interest from Spanish firms in Iranian mining joint ventures. The license signals potential for deeper industrial cooperation, local job creation, and technology transfer in the province.

While challenges from secondary sanctions and financial channels remain, the decision highlights the enduring power of economic diplomacy. Spain’s step shows that mutual commercial benefits can create openings even in complex geopolitical environments.
