Shameful Act in Uniform Alleged - Women's Safety Questioned From India Gate to Jantar Mantar, Demand for FIR Intensifies

New Delhi -India Gate and Jantar Mantar, considered the biggest democratic platforms in the capital, are witnessing protests these days. It is alleged that some police personnel on duty misbehaved with women who came for the protest. Not one, but two different women have claimed that they were touched inappropriately on the pretext of crowd control.

The victims say they tried to file an FIR at the police station, but the complaint was not taken. After this, the matter came into discussion on social media and journalists and social activists have announced a protest at Jantar Mantar today at 3 pm.

What is the whole matter?

According to eyewitnesses, when a group of women was near the barricade during the protest, a policeman was accused of touching them inappropriately amid the pushing and shoving. A video of the incident has also surfaced, in which this act is claimed to have been caught on camera. The authenticity of the video is yet to be investigated by the police.

The second victim said that a similar incident had happened the previous day as well, but she did not come forward due to fear. Now both the victims together are demanding an FIR.

What is the responsibility of Delhi Police?

Delhi Police is known throughout the country as a professional force. According to the Supreme Court guidelines, on a complaint of misbehavior with any woman, an FIR should be registered immediately, the statement should be recorded in the presence of a woman officer and the CCTV footage should be preserved.

In this case too, the same demand is being made - impartial investigation of the allegations, investigation of bodycam and CCTV footage and strict departmental action if found guilty.

What to do if FIR is not being registered?

Many times FIR is not written at the police station, in such a situation the law has given direct options:

1. Written complaint to DCP: Send the complaint by registered post, keep the receiving.

2. Online Portal: File a complaint on delhipolice.gov.in and CPGRAMS.

3. Through Court under 156(3): Magistrate court can order FIR.

4. Women's Commission: On complaint to the National Commission for Women, the Commission itself seeks a report from the police.

Balance between protest and security is necessary

Protest from India Gate to Jantar Mantar is a democratic right, but the safety of women who come in it is the first responsibility of the police. Adequate deployment of women police personnel, mandatory use of bodycams and arrangement of complaint boxes can prevent such allegations.
