One question is echoing from social media to the US Congress right now - "Where is our tax money going?" The images, videos, and battlefield reports that Americans are watching on TV every day are, in a way, funded by their own tax dollars - money that is given as a grant to Israel every year.
A History of US-Israel Aid
The US has been providing foreign aid to Israel since after World War II, and since Israel's formation in 1948, America has remained its biggest ally. According to official data, from 1948 until now, the US has given more than $300 billion in aid to Israel.
A historic agreement was signed in 2016 during the Barack Obama administration - the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Under this, the US promised to give Israel $38 billion in military assistance over 10 years, from 2019 to 2028. This means about $3.8 billion every year, of which $3.3 billion is for Foreign Military Financing and $500 million is for missile defense.
Where Does This Money Come From?
This entire amount comes directly from the pocket of the American taxpayer. The US Congress passes the budget every year and a part of that budget goes to Israel as foreign aid. With this money, Israel mainly buys F-35 fighter jets, Iron Dome missile defense systems, bombs, and other military equipment from American arms companies.
Why Are Questions Being Raised Inside America Itself?
There are two opinions on this inside America itself. One group says that Israel is America's most trusted ally in the Middle East and this aid is necessary for America's national security.
On the other hand, another group, especially young taxpayers, are asking that when America itself is facing problems like inflation, healthcare, student loans, and infrastructure, why are billions of dollars being sent abroad every year? This debate has intensified further after the additional emergency aid of more than $14 billion given to Israel after October 7, 2023.
It is clear that the war images that the American public is seeing are not just news, they are also an account of their own tax dollars.
