The last Friday of the blessed month of Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a special and powerful day known as Yaum al-Quds (International Quds Day).
This is not merely a single day of observance; it is a worldwide call for awakening, unity, and justice.
In Arabic, "Yaum al-Quds" literally means "the Day of Al-Quds" (Jerusalem).
It is dedicated to the liberation of the Palestinian people, especially the freedom of Al-Quds (Jerusalem), and stands as a global symbol of resistance against the Zionist occupation. This day carries a strong message for the entire Muslim Ummah:
To stand firmly against oppression,
To support the oppressed (mazloom),
To refuse to bow before the arrogant powers (mustakbireen).
It was initiated by Imam Ruhollah Khomeini (Rahbar-e-Moazzam Ayatollah Imam Khomeini) and has today become the largest organized platform of solidarity with Palestine across the globe.
→ Imam Khomeini’s Historic Declaration: The Moment of 1979 Shortly after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, on 7 August 1979 (Ramadan 1399 Hijri), Imam Khomeini issued a historic decree.
He appealed to Muslims around the world to designate the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as "Al-Quds Day".
Key excerpt from his declaration (translated):
"I call upon all Muslims of the world to designate the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan – which is a decisive period and can determine the fate of the Palestinian people – as 'Quds Day' and, through a ceremony, demonstrate the solidarity of Muslims worldwide in support of the legitimate rights of the Muslim people of Palestine."
This announcement came at a time when Israel was carrying out attacks on southern Lebanon and intensifying oppression against Palestinians.
Imam Khomeini did not limit it to Palestine alone.
He declared: "Al-Quds Day is not only the day of Palestine; it is the day of all the oppressed of the world who rise against the oppressors."
He transformed it into a global platform against arrogant powers (mustakbireen) and their domination.
Why the Last Friday of Ramadan Was Chosen Ramadan is the holiest month for Muslims – a time of fasting, worship, recitation of the Qur’an, and peak spiritual unity.
The last Friday (Jumma-tul-Wida / Alvida Jumma) was selected for several profound reasons:
Peak of spiritual strength and worship – ideal for resistance and unity.
After Friday prayers, massive processions and rallies can be organized easily and powerfully.
Imam Khomeini stated that this month can become decisive for the fate of Palestinians because Muslim unity reaches its highest level during Ramadan.
It provides the perfect opportunity for global awakening, as Muslims across continents are spiritually connected at the same time.
Deep Significance and Objectives of Yaum al-Quds This day is linked to multiple great purposes:
Liberation of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) – the third holiest city in Islam, home to Masjid al-Aqsa and the sacred precincts.
In 1967, Israel illegally occupied East Jerusalem – this day stands as a direct challenge to that occupation.
Resistance against Zionism and Israeli atrocities – oppression of Palestinians, threats to Masjid al-Aqsa, and illegal settlements.
Global solidarity with all oppressed people – according to Imam Khomeini, this day belongs to the mazloom of the entire world (Kashmir, Yemen, Afghanistan, and beyond).
It is not merely an Arab-Islamic issue; it is a universal struggle for justice.
Strengthening Islamic Ummah unity – uniting Muslims to stand strong before tyrants.
International protest – massive government-organized marches in Iran, and rallies in Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and even India.
How Yaum al-Quds is Observed Worldwide The day is marked with immense zeal and passion across the globe:
Massive processions immediately after Friday prayers – millions take to the streets.
Slogans and banners – "Death to Israel", "Death to America", "Palestine will be free", burning of Israeli and American flags.
Speeches and messages – In Iran, the Supreme Leader (currently Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) delivers a special address; scholars and leaders speak worldwide.
Rallies and demonstrations – from Tehran to London, New York, Delhi, Karachi, Istanbul, and many other cities.
Media and social media campaigns – posters, videos, hashtags (#QudsDay, #YaumAlQuds) spread awareness rapidly.
Yaum al-Quds in 2026: A Rare and Special Occasion As of March 2026, the holy month of Ramadan is underway.
This year, Ramadan contains 5 Fridays – a rare occurrence after 26 years.
The last Friday (Alvida Jumma) is expected on 13 March or 20 March 2026 (depending on moon sighting).
This makes Yaum al-Quds even more powerful, as the unity and strength of the Ummah will be at its peak.
Imam Khomeini’s Vision Remains Alive Today Imam Khomeini turned the Palestinian cause from a local issue into a global struggle for justice.
He stated: "The existence of Zionist Israel is a danger to Muslims, and the struggle will continue until its liberation."
Today, as atrocities continue in Gaza, Yaum al-Quds remains a ray of hope for the oppressed.
This day reminds us: No tyranny can survive in the face of unity.
Palestine will be free.
Al-Quds will be liberated!
