An incident during a government event in Patna, Bihar's capital, on December 15, 2025, has ignited widespread controversy across the country. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was distributing appointment letters to newly recruited AYUSH doctors. When a Muslim woman doctor, Nusrat Parveen, came on stage, Nitish Kumar pulled down her hijab (niqab). The video clearly shows the woman appearing uncomfortable, while some people on stage were seen laughing. The clip went viral on social media, quickly escalating into a major political storm.
This incident is not just a personal mistake but raises serious questions about women's personal space and religious freedom. In Islam, the hijab symbolizes a woman's dignity, respect, and modesty. The Quran and Hadith clearly state that women have the right to set their own boundaries. No one can
unnecessarily interfere in their boundaries, nor should anyone cross another's. As one scholar put it, "Islam has set a boundary for you... neither allow anyone into your boundary nor enter someone else's."
A woman has her own personal space, which is the foundation of her freedom and security. Nitish Kumar's action is not only insulting but is also being seen as a violation of constitutional rights. India's Constitution protects religious freedom (Article 25) and personal dignity. Amnesty International called it an attack on the woman's dignity, autonomy, and identity.
Opposition parties – Congress, RJD, Samajwadi Party – described it as a grave offense against women and demanded Nitish Kumar's resignation or apology. Congress stated that if a person in the state's highest position does this publicly, how safe are women?
After the incident, Dr. Nusrat Parveen did not join her job, highlighting the depth of the humiliation. Condemnation came from Kashmir to Pakistan, though many Indian leaders dismissed it as an internal matter rejecting foreign interference. Some ministers in the ruling side called it "fatherly behavior," but the public and experts are rejecting this. Union Minister Giriraj Singh's controversial statement added fuel to the fire, while BSP supremo Mayawati termed it "unfortunate."
This controversy reminds us how easily those in power can cross boundaries. Removing a Muslim woman's hijab is an insulting act that not only hurts religious sentiments but raises questions about women's safety in society. Can any man touch a woman's choice against her will? The answer is clearly no. Nitish Kumar should express regret over this, sending a message that no boundary violation will be tolerated.
This event shows how crucial tolerance and respect are in a diverse country like India. Hopefully, this controversy will serve as a lesson, ensuring such acts are not repeated in the future. Women's dignity and religious freedom are supreme – no one can take them away.
