Leak in the System, Crack in Power? - Gyanesh Kumar's Resignation Becomes a 'Do or Die' Question for Modi Government

New Delhi: There is only one topic of discussion in the political corridors of Delhi these days - "System leaked from within". The news is that the infighting inside the Election Commission is no longer limited to the Commission itself, but its heat is directly reaching the Central Government. The question is arising - is the Modi government on the verge of collapse?

When The Indian Express report last week revealed that two Election Commissioners had objected to their own decisions 14 times in 10 months, the opposition got a big issue. The opposition alleges that when the protectors themselves are raising questions, how can we trust the electoral process?

 Government on a double-edged sword?

According to political pundits, the government is currently caught in a strange double crisis, which is called 'Catch-22':

 1. If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign: The opposition will call it a murder of democracy and intensify the agitation from the streets to the Parliament. The slogan 'Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod' has already turned Delhi into a cantonment. Questions have started being raised about India's democracy in the international media as well. This will damage the government's image and fuel talk of its end being near.

 2. If the resignation happens: This could become an even bigger crisis for the government. The opposition will call it its victory and prove that the resignation was a decision taken under pressure from its demands. This may give a chance to disgruntled MPs and MLAs within the ruling alliance itself to rebel. Sources say that many MPs are already uncomfortable and in such a situation, even while being in the government, they may show rebellious attitudes like MPs of other parties.

That is, a situation of being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Is the government really falling apart?

However, the ground reality is that the Central Government still has a full majority in the Lok Sabha. The fall of the government is not decided only by the resignation of an Election Commissioner. But yes, it definitely creates moral and political pressure.

The opposition is trying to make this issue bigger by linking it to the deletion of 13 crore names in SIR (Special Intensive Revision) and the leak of 14 objections. Their argument is that when the system itself is leaking from within, how will the government survive?

The next 48 hours are considered very crucial. The next official statement of the Election Commission and the opposition's strategy will decide whether this crisis is averted or deepens further.
